Setting the Mood with Layered Lighting
Waking up to the morning shadows that dance across your wall. Eating dinner with a sweetheart by flickering candlelight. Strolling through a quiet city under soft lamplight. Not only can lighting shape how you feel, it can shape your memories. That's why it's one of the most important elements in your home.
You use the same rooms many different ways throughout the day, so layered lighting is key. It gives you options from morning to night to complement and enhance your life at home. Just three layers of light can take you from a bright, energetic start to the day, to a soft, calm wind-down in the evening:
Ambient Lighting | Ambient lighting is your foundation of light. It fills the room with general illumination. Recessed lights in the ceiling are frequently the best source for ambient lighting.
Accent Lighting | Accent lighting is how you create interest and draw attention to certain features, like art, a tabletop, and architectural details. Chandeliers, wall sconces, and directional up- or down-lights can all be accent lighting.
Task Lighting | Task lighting is the final and perhaps most self-explanatory layer. You use task lights for specific purposes, like reading, cooking, and shaving or putting on makeup. Floor and table lamps, under cabinet lighting, and vanity lights are common task lighting.
The one constant for making the most of all of these lights is dimmers. Put all of these lights on dimmers, and you have limitless lighting possibilities!
Another benefit of thoughtful, holistic lighting design is the character it adds. Where lighting is sometimes an afterthought, it can instead be driving force in a space -- a statement piece that sets the tone. For example, we added this multi-bulbed chandelier to a living room in Tarrytown. Look closely -- every bulb has real goose feather wings! The minute you walk in and see such a whimsical chandelier, you know the homeowner has a sense of humor!
Lighting can be so fun. Why settle for boring? When fantastic fixtures can offer function, wow-factor, and mood, they're worth the investment!
