A curated perspective on the worlds of fashion and interiors, all things design.
One of my favorite things in life is red carpet season. There is a magic that comes along with being on the red carpet. For a moment in time all of these people get to experience what I can only imagine to be time standing still.
Jaw-Dropping Glamour. Chic Details. Curated Collections. Jump-into-it Giant Sofa. Whatever it means to you, if your space is designed around YOU, then you too can have your Red Carpet moment every day.
A curated life means beginning and ending every day in a space that works for you and makes you feel special. A designed closet reflects your style, tastes, needs, and habits. If you are never going to put each pair of shoes away in a clear plastic bin at the end of the day, then design your closet with open shoe storage instead. A well designed closet reflects how you truly live, and makes your life easier every day.
Integrating what might be perceived as a 'rustic' element within a modern aesthetic is incredibly satisfying. Being a Designer with a modern aesthetic myself, sometimes proposing the use of a reclaimed product can be a tough sell to a client. However, I really love doing so as this is one of the ways to bring life into a space and I love the addition of warmth and texture that a reclaimed piece introduces with more modern elements.
Austin has typically been a laid back, eclectic, whatever goes kind of town. I can design to that, but my aesthetic is more in tune with where the city is heading as it grows - a warm, modern feel with sexy, fuzzy edges.
School's out. Daylight lasts well into the evening. And you are ready to show off your new swimsuit at the pool. Every evening after work, and every day of the weekend - you want to spend all your free time outdoors.
Clothing can be luxurious. Think cashmere sweaters and Louboutin heels. But if they are ill-fitting or not the right cut, you will not be comfortable. Your mood and experiences will reflect that discomfort. Clothing can be comfortable. Your favorite yoga pants or pull-over hoodie are comfortable but may not reflect your lifestyle.

All I can say is that there are times that all the hard work is worth it. We were honored to be invited to join a team of 9 fabulous designers to create a 'housewarming' for a group foster home, Central Texas Table of Grace. Given only one month from walk through to installation, this was a quick project to put it mildly. However, in that month, I was time and again pleasantly surprised and humbled by the generosity of those I know - and those I had never seen before.
My friend and fellow interior designer, Kelly LaPlante, invited me to join a team of Interior Designers for a great cause. The project is to create a beautiful environment for a new group home for kids, ages 6-17, in Round Rock. All the designers met at the home, Central Texas Table of Grace (CTTG) to kick off the project on September 9th.
Nurseries today are versatile with modern designs, gender-neutral décor and creative storage solutions to transition baby well into the toddler years and beyond.
“Clients are looking for their nurseries to function appropriately for their newborns, but are also aware that kids grow so quickly that the look and function that they need for a newborn changes pretty quickly,” said Robin Colton, interior designer with Robin Colton Studio.
You may not know this about me... I was an accomplished pianist back in the day. I learned how to play on my parents upright piano. I wish now that I could remember if they had it and I started playing it, or if they bought it specifically for me. What I do know, is that I actually really loved to play - through mandatory daily practice sessions and all!
I love my clients. I love design. I love finding solutions. I love to craft spaces that inspire and elevate people. The work that I do satisfies me in every way every day. but. then. again. It is FABULOUS to be recognized for the work I do!
Q : My spouse has a collection of old cameras and they are spread all across the house. How can I create a special space to showcase this collection?
I realized this morning that one year ago, we were making final preparations to head out on our longest and most extravagant family trip yet ~ we were headed overseas to Europe!!! My daughter had spent the Spring semester of 2014 studying abroad in Angers, France. Well, I missed her terribly (thank you Skype for existing and keeping us in touch) and we thought what better excuse to head to Europe than to pick her up at the end of her semester. My husband Mykol had never been out of the country (only Vancouver BC on our honeymoon when we lived in Seattle, but that’s not that far out of the country…), and I had not been to France since my high school exchange trip to France. Needless to say, I think we are both reminiscing about our trip these days as our dinner conversation last night revolved around the European lifestyle and how different it is than the American lifestyle. This got me to thinking
Q : I am ready to start the process of creating a color palette for my home. How do I know where to start?
A to the Q : This great question came in regarding color scheme and how to select the right one. Color inspiration is everywhere ~ I'll show you how to sift through it all and create a color scheme for your home.
I was sweating through my morning workout today, and the instructor in my online video stated “Detail is king!” She was of course referring to all of the little adjustments and positions that I am supposed to think about through each and every exercise - ears out of my shoulders, pull my belly button to my spine, toes at 1 and 11, knees bent right over ankles… each of these ‘details’ during my workout is meant to maximize my results and minimize injury. So every morning at 6:30 when I turn on my Barre3 online workout, I am thinking about detail already. I don’t think I have to tell you, that thought process stays with me All. Day. Long.
Q : I walked into the house you were showing on the tour and loved the gray color on the walls! What is that paint color and how do I know if it's right for my home?
A to the Q : The question-of-the-day on the Interiors Tour was 'What is the color on the walls?' The answer - Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl. But here's where the lively discussions began!

Whether that is in trying that pair of red heels with your jeans and silk blouse instead of your standard loafer. Or ordering the dish at the restaurant you're not sure about but sounds amazing. Or getting up in front of the group and pitching your best idea. Or going forward with a design idea that is out of your frame of reference. It's those moments when we run right past our comfort zones that the magic happens.
