Where I Started

I worked for 10 years in the fashion industry, including as a Lead Designer for Nordstrom's Private Label division in Seattle, before switching my focus to interiors. I was a Senior Interior Designer at a local firm for nearly 5 years before opening Robin Colton Studio in 2011. I have over twenty years professional experience in design to offer you.

As we work together, things that are important to you deep within will come to the surface. Through a strong visual vocabulary and intelligent integration of architectural detailing as well as a refined use of materials, sophisticated colors, and elements of interior design, I am able to deliver you an authentic and unique vision for your project.

PROJECTS

We work in harmony with architects, general contractors, soft goods workrooms, tradespeople, artisans, craftsmen and landscape designers, among others. A trademark service of our studio is the custom design of pieces for our projects. We encourage clients to meet with us and consider this collaborative process before committing designs to paper.

Austonian downtown living

The clients, a professional couple, wanted their space in downtown Austin to be modern, sophisticated, fun and most importantly to have an amazing boudoir. For the interior design, Robin took inspiration from their fine art collection to elevate the elegance and joy of their high-rise home.

Where I Started

I spent my childhood in Paradise Valley, Arizona and developed a passion for fashion design beginning when my mother taught me to sew at age 7. My passion led me to Los Angeles where I studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. After switching my focus to interiors, I studied Interior Design at Bellevue College while working with the team at Six Walls in Mercer Island, Washington.

Where I’ve Been

I have been lucky enough to travel around the world: Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong. In 2006 I set roots in Austin with my family. Austin has typically been a laid back, eclectic, whatever-goes kind of town. My aesthetic is more in tune with where the city is heading as it grows - a warm, modern feel with sexy, fuzzy edges.

Praise isn’t what drives us, but it’s nice when it happens! Here is a look at some of our accolades.

I know now that I’ve done this project with a designer who knows what they’re doing, I know I can do it again. We can do it again. I know the next thing I do with Robin would be different and I would still love it. She just does beautiful stuff.

It’s going to be stunningly beautiful. I wouldn’t have known the stain colors, I wouldn’t have known the paint colors, I wouldn’t have known the way we picked the island versus the backsplash versus the other stuff. Some of the things we picked in the beginning were out of my comfort zone.
~ Kay
Robin just picked out beautiful things. Robin has a way of sort of paring down all the opportunities. She did a great job of getting a sense of what I liked and what I would like. I didn’t have to look at a billion things. She said look through this, and from that she could tell what direction to go in. I think that’s definitely a talent, a skill that not everyone has. ... Robin just did a really great job at figuring out what I was going to like.

GIVING BACK IN AUSTIN

Robin was the 2013-2014 American Society of Interior Designers Austin Chapter Membership Chair and also Chair of Austin's largest event for the Interior Design community. She re-envisioned and re-branded the event, expanding its influence and reach. Robin brought in national and local experts, including Christopher Kennedy as keynote speaker and a panel discussion featuring top Austin architects Kevin Alter, Jay Corder and Michael Hsu. As a result, the national and local sponsorship increased by thousands of dollars, and attendance was the highest in the events existence.

Robin participated in DIFFAs Urban Picnic by Design. She partnered with David Wilkes Builders to create a stunning picnic table to fund raise for AIDS Services of Austin. She also put together a volunteer team to design and install a game room for Central Texas Table of Grace, a group foster home in Round Rock.

Since founding her studio, Robin has also made donations to KUT, KUTX, Austin Pets Alive!, Wags Hope & Healing, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Safe Place, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, TexArts, and the Salvation Army.
